| Who Is Greater Than Love?

*WHO IS GREATER THAN LOVE ?

Sudhakar Gaidhani

Clad in the robes

of deep night,

you play with moonbeams daily

In a garden of grey clouds,

waiting endlessly

for the moon

for no apparent reason.

Meanwhile,

I—a green butterfly—

evading the gaze

of thorny sentinels

In the rose garden,

and dodging the army

of honeybees,

gather the fragrance

of roses

for the dark, lustrous

bun of your hair.

Night after night,

standing like

a madman on the garden path,

I wait for you—

though even I do not

understand why.

Nor does my restless

heart comprehend

when exactly we shall meet.

Yet, at every dawn,

I come to the garden—

weaving a garland of fragrance

for your intricate braid

and dark hair bun;

and I sit there,

waiting for you,

until the day fades

and rests in the lap of night.

But today, something

truly extraordinary

has happened;

someone has

somehow understood

the sorrow I bear—

My eyes welled up

at this realization,

as the wind sensed

the intense yearning

of my heart.

It spoke with affection-

"Come on,

my dear butterfly—

take that garland

of fragrance with you

and gently ride

upon the wings

of my maiden breeze;

It will carry you,

swift as the wind,

straight to your beloved's braid.

Hurry, make haste—

or else,

she too might depart

to be with her lover."

The distinguished poet and critic, Vladimir Dolgov.
This poem is written in the style of Eastern modernism. It is deeply rooted in the traditions of classical Persian-Arabic and Indian Sufi poetry. Similar imagery is often found in the works of Rabindranath Tagore, Rumi, or Omar Khayyam; this poem is no less remarkable.
It combines freedom of form with Eastern metaphorical richness, where every image serves as a symbol.
What is it about—what is its meaning and hidden subtext? Let us explore this allegorical tale of unrequited—or perhaps unattainable—love, and of a spiritual quest and deep emotional experience.

1. The Figure of the Maiden ("clad in the robes of deep night")

Meaning: She is a mysterious beloved, an idealized figure, or even the embodiment of supreme spiritual beauty (representing the Divine in Sufism).

Symbolism: The night, the moon, and the grey clouds signify her inaccessibility, coldness, and detachment. She is captivated by something distant ("playing with moonbeams, awaiting the moon") and remains unaware of the protagonist.

2. The Figure of the Lyrical Protagonist (the "green butterfly")

Meaning: The protagonist views himself as fragile, devoted, and somewhat mad with emotion ("standing like a madman on the garden path").

Symbolism: In Eastern tradition, the butterfly symbolizes a delicate soul ready to be consumed by the flame of love. Overcoming the "thorny guardians" (rose thorns) and the "army of bees" symbolizes the obstacles, hardships of life, and the envy or rivalry of others that the hero must push through to weave a gift (a wreath of roses) for his beloved.

3. The Motif of Waiting and Devotion

Meaning: The hero acts not for the sake of reciprocation, but for the sake of the act of love and devotion itself: "...though even I do not understand why. And my restless heart knows not, either..." This is love as a calling and a destiny, rather than a pragmatic exchange.

4. The Finale: Wind and Hope

Meaning: Fate—or a sympathetic external force (the Wind)—takes note of the hero's sorrow. The Wind acts as a "messenger" or a merciful guide, helping to bridge the distance between the butterfly and the beloved.

Symbolism: The Wind carries the wreath directly to the beloved's braid—a sign that sincere feelings and long patience finally find hope of being heard and accepted.

Central Motif:
This is a poetic expression of how quiet devotion, self-sacrifice, and longing find sympathy in nature itself. The hero demands no love in return; he simply wishes to bring beauty to the one he holds as his ideal.
Unforgettable lines. Sufism is not only eternal; it is always contemporary. I am truly glad to have found these lines on my teacher's page.
